ChatGPT Ads vs SEO and AEO: Plan Paid and Organic

TecTony recommends using ChatGPT Ads to test an offer through measurable paid campaigns, while continuing SEO and AEO work so business information is easier to discover and understand. Plan them together, with distinct objectives and reporting. A media purchase is not evidence that a website will earn an organic ranking or AI citation.

Published and official sources checked: 30 September 2026. This is TecTony's planning framework, not a guarantee of platform outcomes.

Give each activity a clear job

Activity Planning objective Useful evidence
ChatGPT Ads Test an offer through eligible paid delivery Spend, qualified leads, appointments and sales
SEO Help people discover useful service or product pages Relevant queries, page discovery, clicks and business outcomes
AEO / GEO Make business information clear for AI search users Answer coverage, identifiable AI referrals and verified citations
A website assistant using RAG Help visitors ask questions about approved business content Answer accuracy, source links and useful handoffs

These are management roles, not a promise that every platform reports every item. Record only what is measurable, and identify the source of each number.

SEO remains a foundation for AI search

Google says SEO principles remain relevant to generative AI search. It does not require special AI files or schema, and Google Search does not use llms.txt to improve rankings. See Google's generative AI search guide.

TecTony's practical starting point is a useful service page, reliable information and a path to the next answer. A system-development page, for example, should explain the scope, intended customer, working process and how to request a project assessment. Supporting articles should address questions the sales team actually encounters and link to the relevant service.

Check the mobile experience and keep service facts consistent across the website, company information and customer documents. This creates a foundation the business can maintain as its offer evolves.

Check access at the website and hosting layers

OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, GPTBot for potential model-training content, and OAI-AdsBot for submitted advertising destinations. Review OpenAI's crawler documentation.

The technical team should check robots.txt together with CDN and hosting controls. Open the actual URL and inspect whether the main information is available. An allowed rule in one file is insufficient if another layer still blocks the request.

Access is one condition to verify; a crawler visit is not a sales result. Continue checking the quality of the page and the customer journey after the access check passes.

Where do Vectorize and RAG fit?

In TecTony's proposed website architecture, RAG lets an assistant retrieve approved business information and use it to support an answer. Vectorize stores and searches content embeddings within that system. The purpose is to help visitors get useful answers from the business's own material.

For example, if someone asks whether a service includes LINE integration, the assistant should find the latest service scope, answer from that scope and link to the source page. When the source does not establish the answer, it should offer a contact route for confirmation.

Test accuracy, citations and handoff behaviour. The website's retrieval system and external search platforms are separate systems. Adding embeddings does not establish that an outside platform will rank or recommend the business. Evaluate the assistant through answer quality, and evaluate search through evidence from the relevant channel.

Allocate budget around a ready offer

TecTony's recommendation is to prepare the offer and destination page, then run a bounded test. A business launching a service can develop a focused set of helpful articles and one landing page. When the advertising account is eligible, test that same offer through a campaign.

Maintain separate reports. The paid report records campaign costs and outcomes under the campaign's measurement definition. The website report records discovery, visits and the business outcomes attributed to those journeys.

For observed AI citations, save the question, checking date, system and source link. That makes an observation repeatable and prevents one screenshot from becoming a claim about market-wide visibility.

Increase spend when lead quality and follow-up capacity support it. Improve content when customers reveal an unanswered question. These decisions allow campaign learning and website learning to support each other without blending their numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Q1: Should a business start with ChatGPT Ads or SEO?
A1: Prepare a useful offer and destination first. Continue SEO work, then test paid campaigns when the account and market are eligible. Set the scope and budget around the business outcome.

Q2: How does TecTony use the terms AEO and GEO?
A2: We use them to describe making answers and business information useful for AI search experiences. That work still needs SEO foundations and content that serves readers.

Q3: Does llms.txt improve Google rankings?
A3: Google says it does not use llms.txt to improve Google Search visibility or rankings. The file can offer an information directory to other systems that choose to read it, without a ranking guarantee.

Q4: How do Vectorize and RAG help a business?
A4: In TecTony's designed systems, they help a website assistant retrieve approved content to answer visitors. Verify accuracy and citations separately from external search rankings.
