Building a Fortune-Telling and Social Platform in Thailand
A fortune-telling platform that lasts calculates the chart in code, lets AI explain it in plain language, frames every reading as entertainment, and settles payments, LINE and personal-data rules before the first screen is designed. What Thai users come for
Fortune content is part of everyday Thai life. Krungsri Research puts the Thai market for mutelu (มูเตลู), fortune-telling and feng-shui goods and services at around THB 10–15 billion, citing a University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce survey; in Krungsri's own survey, 67.4% of respondents were positive about fortune-telling apps and 52.2% said they would be more interested if AI were involved (Krungsri Research: Muteluh — Faith in the Market Place, January 2025). In product terms, people come back for four things:
- Daily and monthly readings they can glance at in seconds.
- Love compatibility (สมพงษ์) between two birthdays.
- Luck guidance — colours, days, numbers and rituals.
- Something to share with a friend or partner in LINE.
A platform that serves those four jobs well, and is honest about what a reading is, has a reason to exist.
Calculate first, then explain
The most important design decision is who does the astrology. If a language model invents placements, two identical questions get two different charts — and users notice. So we split the work:

The same birth data then gives the same chart every time, and the AI is instructed — and checked — to explain only what the engine computed. Test each calculation engine against known reference charts before any AI is connected.
Social features that respect people
Fortune is social by nature — people check compatibility with a crush, compare charts with friends, and share results. Build that, carefully:
- Opt-in matching. Both people agree; each chooses what to reveal, or stays anonymous; the other side can decline.
- Share cards that show a result without exposing anyone's birth details.
- Sharing into LINE with the share target picker, so a result reaches a friend in the app they already use (LIFF API reference: shareTargetPicker).
- No public birth data. Avoid public profiles or feeds that display birth dates, times or readings.
LINE: a LIFF app or a LINE MINI App
LIFF (LINE Front-end Framework) lets a web app open inside LINE and use LINE Login, so users skip a separate sign-up. A LINE MINI App runs the same way but is published under LINE's MINI App policy, and LINE now recommends building new LIFF apps as MINI Apps (LINE Developers: introduction to LINE MINI App). That policy prohibits non-scientific or superstitious content that may confuse or mislead users, and excludes dating and match-making agencies (LINE MINI App Policy, revised 19 February 2026). So a fortune product that wants a home inside LINE must be written and framed as entertainment, keep matching opt-in and social rather than match-making, and be checked against LINE's current policy before launch. Keep the web app as the primary home, with LINE Login, sharing and a LINE Official Account around it.
Payments: check the gateway before you build
Payment providers decide for themselves whether they accept fortune-telling businesses. Stripe's list for Thailand marks supernatural and fortune-telling services as prohibited — and dating services too (Stripe: prohibited and restricted businesses (Thailand)). Opn Payments (Omise) lists fortune telling, palm reading and tarot among the businesses it cannot serve in Thailand (Opn Payments (Omise): prohibited businesses in Thailand). App stores add their own rules: Apple calls fortune telling an established category and accepts new apps only if they offer a meaningfully different or improved experience, and digital content sold inside an app must use in-app purchase (Apple App Store Review Guidelines). We confirm the gateway's current terms in writing before building the payment flow — a product that cannot collect money is a hobby.
Personal data under PDPA
A birth date, time and place identify a person, so they are personal data under Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act. Face or palm photos can go further: data used to identify someone from their physical features can count as biometric data, which the Act treats as sensitive and which needs explicit consent (Thailand PDPA B.E. 2562, sections 19, 20 and 26 (unofficial English translation)). In practice:
- ask for consent clearly, with the purpose, before birth data is used;
- collect only what each feature needs;
- let users delete their data themselves;
- keep photos only as long as the feature needs them, or avoid them;
- get a parent's or guardian's consent for minors (always under 10, and under 20 unless the law lets the minor consent alone).
Thai consumer-protection law also prohibits false or exaggerated advertising, and regulators have flagged exaggerated mutelu claims (iLaw on consumer-protection rules for mutelu advertising). An entertainment framing is good practice, not a legal shield — so make no promises about love, money or health.
Being found: SEO and AEO for fortune platforms
- Put a free tool before the login. A compatibility calculator that works without an account gives people — and search engines — a reason to arrive. We have seen this on our own products: a login wall before any value hides a platform from search.
- Explain each system in plain language, in Thai and English: what Maha Taksa is, how compatibility is scored.
- Give machines a clean map: a sitemap, structured data and an llms.txt index of the public pages.
